Different qualities
In what way do prisms differ in quality? What quality is the best
and what is good value for money? We will try to explain the differences
between the most popular qualities.
Almost everyone has heard of Bohemian crystal. Today however, this
term does not say that much about the quality, and we will soon
explain why. Nowadays different qualities are easier divided into
categories depending on manufacturing process:
- Machine cut crystal (MC)
- Full cut
crystal
- Heavy Lead crystal

Machine
Cut Crystal (MC)
The machine cut crystals are manufactured in Italy and in
Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). This crystal is form pressed and normally
uncut or cut on one facet at the most. The MC crystal is of low
quality, which does not refract light very well. The Bohemian MC
crystal has a slightly greyish tone compared to its Italian counterpart. |

Full Cut
Crystal
The Turkish and the Bohemian (1A) as well as the brilliant crystal
are all full cut crystal and manufactured according to handcrafted
techniques. The crystal is pressed from glass rods in a classic
manner, thereafter, cut and polished by hand. The melted glass in
both Turkish and bohemian crystal sometimes contains some lead oxide. |

Heavy Lead Crystal
The manufacturers of heavy lead crystal are today several.
However, what all of them have in common are that their products
are all are plagiarisms of the Strass crystal from Swarovski.
Strass crystal outshines all the other qualities, but at the same
time is far more expensive. The heavy lead crystal refracts light
extremely well and if your chandelier is clean, this crystal gives
you an extraordinary colour effect on the walls when sunlight shines
on your chandelier. |
